Portage County Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness

NAMI Portage County Meetings

     Meetings are held at the Mental Health & Recovery Board of Portage County, 155 E. Main St., Kent, on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 7 p.m. Members share concerns related to mental illness, hear speakers and work on chapter projects. At this time, the chapter has no other support programs.

All are welcome!

     NAMI, the country's voice on mental illness, is a national organization of persons with mental illness, their families, friends and community activists who work toward improving the lives of the mentally ill. The Portage County chapter was established in the 1980's and is affiliated with NAMI Ohio and the national organization of NAMI.

     NAMI Portage County is dedicated to the eradication of mental illnesses and to the improvement of the quality of life for those whose lives are affected by these diseases, and for their family members.

     All members of NAMI Portage County shall, without exception, not discriminate among those eligible for membership based on sex, age, ethnicity/race, creed, color, sexual preference, disability, or economic status, nor shall membership be limited based upon an individual's declaration of status as either a consumer or a family member.

MISSION STATEMENT - NAMI

     NAMI is dedicated to the eradication of mental illnesses and the improvement of the quality of life of all whose lives are affected by these diseases. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is a non-profit, grassroots, self-help, support and advocacy organization of consumers, families and friends of people with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety disorders.

     NAMI Portage County is one of over 50 affiliates of NAMI Ohio. The state coalition represents an important link in efforts to improve the quality of life for those with mental illness and their families. NAMI Ohio works to implement and integrate services and policies determined at the state and national levels.

    • Learn the latest and most accurate information about mental illnesses by logging on to NAMI's website or reading NAMI newsletters and publications.

    • Learn about and attend NAMI events such as education programs, training programs, state conferences and NAMI's Annual Convention

    • Stay informed and up-to-date on critical policy issues affecting people with mental illness with NAMI.org and NAMI's E-News alerts.

    • Learn about recent advances in research and connect with resources for finding further information. Read the report of NAMI's Research Task Force.

    • Discover information about commonly prescribed medications for mental illnesses and how to obtain medications at low cost.

    • Discover information about local mental health agencies and programs, and how they can help you and your family.

    • Attend local NAMI meetings for support, education, information, referral and advocacy.

    • Learn about current policy issues from NAMI and find out how to contact your state and local government representatives to insure they are working for people with mental illness.

    • Fight stigma by monitoring biased portrayals of people with mental illness.

    • Register your opinion about a topic that interests you by answering one of NAMI's online surveys.

    • Participate in events such as a NAMI Walk to raise awareness and funds for NAMI's mission.
